Bad government at work, Fort Lauderdale-style

FEB 8, 2011 — Pictured below we have the perfect symbol for bad government.
Rather than requiring attractive utility boxes — something which humans are capable of designing — our City Commission allows uncaring ATT to put butt-ugly boxes in very public places in our neighborhoods. The boxes are so ugly that our City Commission requires that they be landscaped by neighbohood-unfriendly ATT — in perpetuity!!!!!! — to hide them from view! How dumb is that?
Apparently ATT gets to put these where they damned well please, because in this case the landscaping blocks the view of people backing out of a SE 4th Avenue driveway (behind the camera). It also blocks views of oncoming traffic from the street just beyond it (SE 13 St). See photos below.
As I have repeatedly urged in recent years ... why doesn't the city just require ATTRACTIVE boxes??? Structures that are not so ugly that they have to be hidden from view????
And why don't we require neighborhood input on their placement??? Two years ago, ATT wanted to put a box in the swale virtually across the street from this one. We raised a stink, and they moved it back into an alley.
With this box, ATT has gotten its revenge. I urge you to remember this when you are choosing sides in the ATT-Comcast war.
100 points to the City Commissioner (or Mayor) who gets this stupid situation fixed!
PS: Look at the emails below and all the city money and manpower that's being wasted to fix a problem that should not be a problem in the first place!!!!!!! Earl, where are you????
Below is the view months ago from the opposite side of the box on SE
There it is!!! When this was called to the city's attention months ago, they decided it was not a problem and did nothing. Then, when a lawyer on the other side of the box threatened a lawsuit over the blocked view from her driveway, the bushes got trimmed.
This ugly box is in Romney's neighborhood ... just feet from Ponce de Leon Boulevard on SE 6 Terrace. Where's the required landscaping? (5/10/10 photo — Some bushes have been added since.)
ATT doesn't landscape or even camouflage-paint this box because they don't have to ... it pre-dates the ordinance. ATT is what you call a bad neighbor. This is the median park in the 100 block of SE 13 Street.
